What is breast reconstruction surgery?

Breast reconstruction surgery is a surgery that can restore the shape, appearance, symmetry, and size of your breasts. Often, this surgery is performed following a mastectomy or lumpectomy performed to treat or prevent cancer. It can also be used to correct congenital deformities.

Is breast reconstruction surgery right for me?

If you have had or will soon have a medical procedure that will negatively affect the shape, appearance, or symmetry of your breasts, such as a lumpectomy or mastectomy, breast reconstruction surgery may be right for you. The best way to answer this question, however, is to speak with a trusted plastic surgeon. If you’re ready to see if breast reconstruction surgery is right for you, schedule a consultation today.

What should I expect during my consultation?

During your consultation, your doctor will help you to determine if breast reconstruction surgery is right for you by reviewing your medical history and learning about your unique aesthetic goals and expectations for the surgery. You should expect your doctor to ask you:

  • What are your expectations for the procedure?

  • What is your desired outcome?

  • Do you have any drug allergies?

  • What previous medical treatments have you received?

  • Have you had any previous surgeries? If so, what were they?

In addition to asking these questions, your plastic surgeon will use your consultation to evaluate your general health status and any preexisting health conditions or risk factors you may have, discuss your breast reconstruction surgery options, examine and measure your breasts, take photographs for your medical record, recommend a course of treatment, discuss likely outcomes of breast reconstruction surgery and any risks or potential complications, and answer your questions.

What should I expect before my breast reconstruction surgery?

Before your breast reconstruction surgery, you may be asked to get lab testing or a medical evaluation, take certain medications or adjust your current medications, stop smoking, and avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements that may increase bleeding. If you have not yet had your lumpectomy or mastectomy, your plastic surgeon will work with the surgeon performing this procedure to determine the best course of action for your reconstruction.

We will also give you special instructions about what to do the night before and morning of your surgery and regarding your post-operative care and follow-up appointments.

We understand that breast reconstruction surgeries often follow difficult courses of medical treatment, and we do everything we can to make the process as smooth as possible.

What will happen during my breast reconstruction surgery?

First, you’ll be administered anesthesia. Your surgeon will recommend the anesthesia option that is best for you. Your plastic surgeon will perform your breast reconstruction surgery, which is often performed immediately after your cancer surgery. The exact procedure will vary depending on your unique needs and desired outcomes. Different procedures are often required to address the effects of different medical treatments. Your doctor can walk you through every step of the procedure during your consultation.

What should I expect after my surgery?

Your doctor will give you instructions regarding your post-operative care. Following these instructions is absolutely vital for the success of your surgery. These instructions will include ensuring that your surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, abrasion, or motion during your recovery. Your doctor will also instruct you regarding the proper care of the surgical site, the use of medications to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, and your overall follow-up care. Sometimes, a breast reconstruction cannot be completed in a single surgery. If this is the case for your reconstruction, you will be given instructions regarding preparing for your future surgeries.

What will my results be like?

Your breast reconstruction surgery will often be performed in stages, which can be described to you by your plastic surgeon. We are honored to play a role in helping survivors to get back to living their lives with renewed self-confidence. With our skilled plastic surgeons, you can be confident that your breast reconstruction surgery will be performed with exceptional skill and artistry.
