How Blepharoplasty Corrects 4 Common Eye Concerns

What is blepharoplasty?

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of your upper eyelids, lower eyelids, and the areas surrounding your eyes. The blepharoplasty procedure can be tailored to fit your unique needs and cosmetic concerns. During your consultation, one of our seven award-winning plastic surgeonswill work with you to come up with a personalized treatment plan that achieves your aesthetic goals.

The best way to determine if eyelid surgery is right for you, is by scheduling a consultation. After helping thousands of patients with their eye-area concerns, our plastic surgeons are sharing four of the most common issues that can be corrected with blepharoplasty.

Under-Eye Bags

One of the most common issues our patients face is under-eye bags. Bags under the eyes are considered mild swelling, puffiness, or dark circles on the skin beneath the eyes. These patients often feel they have a run-down, sleepy look that doesn’t reflect how they feel on the inside.

By performing a lower eyelid blepharoplasty, our patients are able to enjoy a refreshed and brighter-eye appearance. Hear what one patient with under-eye bags had to say about her experience with lower eyelid surgery, and check out her life-changing results!

“After looking at myself in photos and seeing how much of an impact my under eye bags had on my appearance, I decided to do something about it. I'm very happy I did. I chose Dr. Wakelin because of his experience, keen eye for detail, reputation and experience as a board-certified plastic surgeon. The procedure was easy, my first time under general anesthesia. I had a lower blepharoplasty with fat grafting. Admittedly, I looked like I took a beating due to bruising and swelling, but never was I in any pain. I made certain to follow post-op instructions and as every day passed, I looked much better. I feel like this procedure has taken years off of my appearance and I would highly recommend it if you share concerns similar to mine. I also highly recommend Dr. Wakelin at Columbus Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery.”

Hooded Upper Eyelids

While typically caused by aging or genetics, hooded eyelids are a common facial concern that occurs when excess skin folds down from the brow line and covers the eyelid. Many women find it difficult to apply makeup on or around the eyelids due to the heavy, excess skin. Once eye-makeup is applied, it is often barely noticeable or easily smudged. This factor drives many women to upper eyelid surgery.

By undergoing upper eyelid surgery, our skilled plastic surgeons are able to make small, precise incisions to remove excess fat and skin and reposition the tissue. The incisions are often well hidden within the natural eyelid crease. Check out our before and after images from real patients who received eye opening results!

Droopy Eyelids

Some of our younger blepharoplasty patients who are in their twenties or thirties have a droopy eye on one side that causes asymmetries. These individuals are typically born with ptosis, an eye condition that causes one or both upper eyelids to droop below the normal position. It is not common for the condition to be extreme enough that it affects their vision and requires treatment during childhood, but for many individuals, it’s a condition that has bugged them their whole life and impacted their self-confidence.

Correcting ptosis can often be done with an upper blepharoplasty. By removing excess skin and fat and tightening the eyelid muscle, the lid will be lifted up to create a brighter-eyed and more symmetrical appearance.

No Eyelid Crease

Monolid eyes or the absence of eyelid creases are very common for certain Asian groups. Some individuals may lack an eyelid crease or have one that is poorly defined or incomplete, leaving an indiscernible area above the eyelashes.

Correcting monolid eyes is a relatively simple blepharoplasty procedure designed to create a natural eyelid crease. This allows the eyes to appear larger and more defined.
